Instinctual Variants

There are three variants: Social (so) or Sexual (sx) or Self-Preservation (sp). Each variant is a manifestation of how a person’s enneagram type is translated.

History:

In the 1970s, Claudio Naranjo refined Oscar Ichazo’s teachings by introducing instinctual variants—self-preservation, social, and sexual—to the Enneagram. This addition highlighted how primal survival drives shape personality expression, providing deeper insights into motivations and interpersonal dynamics.

Sp - "self-preservation"

This is when a person’s Enneagram type concentrates on individualism and focuses on personal safety, health, and comfort. It emphasizes the self-preservation instinct, prioritizing the securing of resources, the maintenance of well-being, and physical survival.

So - "social"

This is when a person’s Enneagram type focuses on social impact, social group dynamics, and community belonging. It emphasizes building social relationships, understanding social hierarchies, and contributing to collective well-being.

Sx - "sexual"

This is when a person’s Enneagram type focuses on deep connections, intensity, and meaningful, intimate relationships. Sexual types seek intense interactions, focusing on chemistry and one-on-one bonding.
